You are a considered<\/g> a pioneer in the discourse of Heritage and Environment in Albania. What sparked your interest to examine these kinds of linkages in your native country?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

I am a Professor at the University of Tirana in the Department of Geography and teach natural and cultural heritage, human ecology and<\/span> economic evaluation of natural resources. In the new political, social and economic reality, Albania\u2019s natural environment and cultural heritage is<\/g> facing human-induced threats. Economic prosperity and conservation are clashing and bringing different uses of the resources. \u00a0In this transitional moment for the country that is moving from a centralized economy to one of a free market<\/g> several new issues have come up concerning both heritage and environment. As a result, my professional interests shifted to study, promote, and protect Albanian heritage, a relatively new and unexplored area of study which requires additional research. <\/span><\/p>\n

Islam has had a long and enduring legacy in Albania. What are some of the most important influences and heritage sites that stand out today?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

Although a small country, Albania has a great number of monuments of archaeology, architecture, ethnography, history, and art that bear not only the creative talent of Albanians in different periods of history but also the influence from other cultures in the long process of exchange and co-existence with them. Albania has always been a crossroad of civilizations and influences which explains the variety of heritage sites.
<\/span>
<\/span>In Albania<\/g> there are over 2400 designated monuments of culture. Out of 591 antique and Middle Ages monuments, 483 are citadels and city ruins, 108 are bridges, water pipes, etc. Out of 179 monuments of cult (Christian and Muslim)<\/g> 109 are churches, thirty-three church ruins, twelve monasteries, eleven mosques, three tyrbe<\/g> (bektashian<\/g> shrine), five tekke<\/g> (bektashian<\/g> shrine), and one Islamic complex. Out of these, 373 are characteristic folk houses of the first category and 1151 of the second category.
<\/span>
<\/span>Albania also includes a number of sites listed in the World Heritage List of UNESCO such as:<\/g> Butrint (1992), Gjirokastra city (2005) and Berat city (2008). Iso-polyphony of Laberia<\/g> is included in this list in 2005 as a \u201cMasterpiece of Vocal Heritage of Mankind\u201d together with two codices from Berati registered under \u201cWorld Memory Treasures\u201d in 2005. With respect to Islam in particular<\/g> Gjirokastra and Berat city are enlisted as UNESCO sites for their unique ottoman architecture. Also<\/g> many citadels, bazaars, mosques, tyrbe<\/g>, tekke, bridges, characteristic houses, etc., are lovely constructions of ottoman style. <\/span><\/p>\n

500 years of coexistence with Ottomans has undoubtedly left imprints not only on the architecture but also on the religion (about 70% of the Albanians are Muslims), traditional folk music which is largely shaped by Ottomans. <\/span>Instruments, style of singing, playing, dancing, traditional oral poetry and storytelling, dressing (folk costumes), cuisine, social relations, etc., are other notable areas of Ottoman influence in the Albanian culture. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some of the current projects that you are working on?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past 20 years, Albania has aspired and worked hard to rejoin the international community after decades of isolation. At this pivotal moment when transformation<\/g> is accelerating, I am particularly concerned with the protection of heritage and nature sites. My forthcoming book is on the <\/span>Protected areas of Albania, challenges of a developing country<\/span><\/i> which I have worked on during my fellowship at the Rachel Carson Center-LMU.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to my book, I have taken the opportunity to organize an exhibition at the RCC featuring \u201cNature, culture and<\/g> tourism in Albania\u201d. This exhibit will travel internationally because there is a growing interest in discovering Albania\u2019s natural and human landscapes that are still largely unknown to the global community. <\/span><\/p>\n

Acknowledging the growing investment in tourism in my country, I have decided to prepare a detailed guidebook that will not only inform travelers about <\/span>Tourism in the protected areas in Albania<\/span><\/i> but will hopefully engage them in becoming stewards of these precious landscapes. <\/span><\/p>\n

Together with colleagues from Eberswalde University, Germany, we are also drafting a project within Erasmus about <\/span>Augmented reality in the Marine protected area \u201cKaraburun-Sazan\u201d<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nature everywhere is under accelerated threat, through infrastructure development, industrialization, and even tourism. What are some of the steps that you think should be taken to help protect Albania’s pristine natural habitat as the country becomes increasingly more open to tourism.<\/g>\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Albania is a small country with high potential for tourism development either for balnear<\/g> tourism, ecotourism, health tourism, nature tourism, adventure tourism, etc. \u00a0Tourism is also increasingly considered one of the major economic sector<\/g> for the country. As a result, the is much being done either for infrastructure development but also for the promotion of those sites with the highest tourist potential. The goal is \u00a0to<\/g> eventually attract a growing number of visitors. As Albania is becoming increasingly open to tourism some crucial issues need to be addressed such as:<\/g> Is Albania prepared for this boom of tourists? What is the capacity for certain parks or areas? Do the parks or sites have the facilities to meet the requests of the visitors? Besides nature do these tourist sites meet the expectations of the tourists? What model should Albania follow, intensive or soft tourism? These are some of the questions that need to be answered in a professional way. We need to make a contribution for<\/g> the development of sustainable tourism; support the local communities; revitalize small and remote rural areas; and stimulate development which does not harm the environment. To achieve this we must take into account all the political, scientific, economic and environmental dimensions. Some of the steps toward smart and soft tourism are to create a Tourism strategy, stimulate the development of ecotourism, support small startups businesses, promote agrofarms<\/g> and agrotourism, develop virtual reality or augmented reality for the protected areas, develop apps to assist tourists within the sites, develop hiking trails in national parks, guarantee safety to tourists, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

          About Merita Dollma<\/g><\/b><\/h4>\n

          Merita Dollma is a lecturer at the University of Tirana in the Geography department of the Faculty of History and Philology. She worked as a scientific researcher at the Albanian Academy of Sciences from 1995 to 2007. Since 2008, she has been a full-time professor in the Geography department, where she teaches natural and cultural heritage, human ecology, and economic evaluation of natural resources at both bachelor and master’s level. She is author and coauthor<\/g> of three books, two university text books<\/g>, and two high school textbooks. She has published more than forty scientific papers in both Albanian scientific journals and foreign journals and her main fields of study include natural and cultural heritage, ecology, and GIS\/RS.<\/span><\/p>\n
