The annual workshop of the “Culture, Rights, and Representation in/for the 21st Century” Research Kitchen, “(Re-)Locating Rights” addresses issues of accessibility, displacement, governance, and dissidence to ask where and how we find rights to begin with. Our first panel, “Rights In and Out of Place,” reflects on how nation-states both uphold and inhibit calls for universal human rights. Our second panel, “Rights In and Out of Sight,” wrestles with visibility as a powerful yet problematic metaphor for the search for recognition. Our third panel, “Rights on Location,” discusses Susan Mieselas’s photojournalism. Our culminating roundtable, “(Re-)Locating Rights,” brings all our guests together for an interdisciplinary discussion on alternative possibilities.
Guests: Roberto Casati (Institut J. Nicod, CNRS), Tyrell Haberkorn (U of Wisconsin), Nur Amali Ibrahim (Yale NUS), Susan Mieselas (Magnum Foundation), Maheen Mirza (Ektara Collective), Matthew Murray (Harvard University), Marte Nilsen (PRI Oslo)
