Workshop | Writing and Archiving Feminist Histories of Cinema

April 28-29, 2023 | NYUAD

Open to the NYU Abu Dhabi community

This workshop brings together feminist scholars, artists, archivists and curators to engage with questions around writing and archiving feminist histories of cinema. How are women artists and filmmakers representing themselves in and through their work? How can we claim these representations to counter histories that have consistently erased the work of women in cinema? This workshop builds on an ongoing collaboration with Indian filmmakers Reena Mohan, Bina Paul and Surabhi Sharma on a project titled ‘A Room of Our Own’ that attempts to write a gendered history of Indian Cinema. The workshop will provide an opportunity to assemble key scholars, filmmakers, archivists, and artists to share their own work and engage with a presentation on the material collected and organized thus far in ‘A Room of Our Own’.

The workshop is supported by the “Culture, Rights, and Representation in/for the 21st Century” Research Kitchen at New York University Abu Dhabi.
