Clare Lesser is a singer who specializes in the performance of 20th century and contemporary repertoire. She studied at Birmingham University, Birmingham Conservatoire, the University of Sussex, and the University of York. She has given over 60 world premieres (having worked with Michael Finnissy, Hans Joachim Hespos, Karlheinz Stockhausen, James Dillon, Heinz Holliger etc.,) and her work has been recognized with a Royal Philharminc Society award nomination and she was co-winner of the 2018 Terry Holmes Award. Her critically acclaimed recordings are released on the Métier label, and include works by Finnissy, Holliger, Rihm and Scelsi. Her research interests focus on deconstruction and indeterminate music, with particular emphasis on the works of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Michael Finnissy and Hans Joachim Hespos. She has just completed an article for PaaLabRes (Lyon, France) titled ‘Inter Muros – John Cage and Domain Heterogeneity,’ and is preparing a book chapter for the Orpheus Institute (Ghent, Belgium) on ‘Pragmatic Approaches to the Rehearsal Process in Indeterminate Music.’ She will be recording two new albums of music by Michael Finnissy and David Lesser in 2021 with the clarinetist Carl Rosman, French horn player Julian Faultless, and the pianist David Lesser.
