She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship for graduate study in the US. Her dissertation developed a theory of masochism as an interpretive lens into the effects of unequally distributed social power.\u00a0 Her articles have been published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nordic Theater Studies.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before joining NYU Abu Dhabi, Piia taught writing at NYU Shanghai and NYU\u2019s Liberal Studies.\u00a0 She was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Drama at Oberlin College and has taught numerous classes at Barnard College\u2019s Theater Department, including World Theater; Drama, Theater, Theory; and American Drama in the 1990s and a class at Columbia University\u2019s MFA program in theater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally from Finland, Piia has lived in 6 other countries and is an avid traveler.\u00a0 Her travel writing has been published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punctuate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matador Network, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culture-ist. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Her NYU Abu Dhabi First-year Writing Seminars concentrate on travel narratives, theories of cultural encounters and urban centers as sites of gender and cultural performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Piia Mustam\u00e4ki is a scholar of travel narratives, theater and cultural and performance studies.
