Working primarily with the photograph, Anup Mathew<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>Thomas<\/strong>\u2019s works engage ostensibly local narratives,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>introducing audiences to stories that may have gone<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>missing from the archive. Over the last two decades, he<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has produced a series of projects that engage with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and make reference to the cultural history of his native<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Kerala. Predominantly working in series, his images<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>offer access to microhistories and subcultures<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>embedded in the seemingly every day. They also bring<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to light phenomena and social realities in Kerala and <\/span>India that is hard to grasp, such as the perpetuation of cultural myths that reinforce social<\/span> hierarchies, or which generate behaviors mixing religious and political practices. He employs<\/span> b<\/span>oth anecdotal and factual narrative styles, and the work often culminates in carefully staged<\/span> p<\/span>ortraiture.
