November: Dr. Rabeh presented a poster as part of the Qatar Foundation Annual Research Conference in Doha, Qatar entitled "How to Cure Cancer with a Pill? A Structure-Based Drug Design Study on Human Hexokinase 2 targeting different Tumor types."

August: SBBC lab was awarded time at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) a third-generation synchrotron light source in Switzerland at the X06DA (PXIII) beamline for their work on bioluminescence.

August: Dr. Rabeh was invited speaker at the 23rd congress of the international union of crystallography in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Rabeh’s presentation tittle: "Crystal Growth to Foster Inquiry−Based Learning: First Year Science Laboratory." as part of the Crystal Growth lab series taught in the Foundation of Sciences 3 and 4.

August: SBBC lab is collaborating with Prof. Gergely Lukacs laboratory at McGill University in Montreal, QC, Canada on the human Hexokinase 2 project for the characterization of cancer progression. Dr. Luckacs lab will analyze the Human Hexokinase using HDX (Hydrogen–Deuterium Exchange) to locate the conformational changes on the protein upon binding to the mitochondria.

June: Dr. Rabeh presented at the Enzyme Mechanisms by Biological Systems that is part of EMBO conferences in Manchester, UK, a poster entitled "the Mitochondrial Dissociation Effect on the Human Hexokinase 2 and its role in Tumor Progression”.

February: SBBC lab received funding from the Terry Fox Foundation for one-year for our grant proposal “Discovery, Development and Molecular Mechanism of Novel Inhibitors of Human Hexokinase 2 as Anticancer Therapeutics." The research project will focus on the molecular mechanism of inhibitors of the enzyme Hexokinase as anticancer therapeutics.

Big Leap Forward for Disease Treatment

ABU DHABI // An Abu Dhabi scientist says he has discovered a treatment for cystic fibrosis that could boost the life expectancy of sufferers."A drug based on this research will be able to help patients survive this illness if they take it throughout their lives."

Dr Wael Rabeh, a professor at New York University Abu Dhabi, said the discovery had the potential to help between 50 and 80 per cent of sufferers.

Dr Rabeh said the research, published last week in the scientific journal Cell, was a new step in treating the recessive genetic disorder.

"It is ready for a clinical trial," he said. "A drug based on this research will be able to help patients survive this illness if they take it throughout their lives."
