On May 8th, 2023, “The Way We Move: Can Information and Technology Change It?” provided an engaging discussion on the issue of urban mobility and the prevalent traffic congestion affecting cities worldwide. Presented by Monica Menendez, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs; Director of the Research Center for Interacting Urban Networks (CITIES); Professor of Civil and Urban Engineering, NYUAD, the talk addressed the challenges posed by urban population growth and increasing motorization rates, which are expected to exacerbate congestion levels and their associated negative externalities. Menendez delved into the possibility of predicting congestion spread in cities, developing proactive mitigation strategies, and promoting sustainable transportation modes to alleviate congestion. Attendees gained valuable insights into innovative approaches to addressing urban mobility issues and fostering more sustainable urban transportation systems.
